What if a porch light could tell you more than whether someone was home? Mothlight turns one ordinary fixture into a small observatory, counting the moths drawn to its glow and making the neighborhood’s nocturnal visitors visible without photographing or fabricating them.

This field guide follows the making of Site 152, where the central design challenge was to represent life that arrives unpredictably, then disappears into the dark. Its answer is a set of “semantic light attractors”: visual cues that give borrowed light a role beyond illumination. The result connects a familiar household object to a different kind of smart-home question—not just how efficiently a light works, but what it brings within reach.
For readers interested in connected devices, home lighting, or the design choices behind meaningful environmental data, Mothlight offers a thoughtful shift in perspective. Explore the field methods to see how the system turns a porch into a census—and why the most consequential detail is something you might not notice until the light is on.
